Thank you to all the families who came to Carnivale!

To celebrate the launch of our website, Better Beginnings held a free family day in the Perth Cultural Centre and the State Library of WA on Sunday the 15th of April.

The wonderful stilt walking Butterfly!Carnivale was better than we could have ever expected, with so many families visiting the State Library and Better Beginnings HQ. We had visitors from the inner city areas of Perth and visitors from as far Bunbury who made the drive up to Perth just for the day. We were so happy to see so many smiling faces, on children and on adults.

We met so many creative young ones that put their talents toward creating books in our Book Cubby, decorating Briony Stewart’s giant Mr Butterfly sculpture and turning The Terrible Plop by Ursula Dubosarsky in to a shadow puppet performance. We had fantastic, modernised nursery rhymes from local band Boys Boys Boys!, a wonderful magician and excellent storytellers and let’s not forget all the beautiful little ones that posed for portraits in the Hairy Tales of Hero Boy Photo Booth.Nola in the wonderful Heroboy photobooth

Please visit our facebook page to see some of the lovely photos from the day, including those from the photobooth, and keep an eye out for more to come throughout the week.

Thank you to everyone involved in making the day happen, and all those families that involved themselves in the activities and made the day such a success.

If you came along to Carnivale yesterday, we would love to know what you thought. This is the first time the State Library of WA & Better Beginnings has run an event on this scale and your feedback would be invaluable to any future events.

We have a short online survey, it should take only a few moments, and your ideas are most appreciated.

I always knew reading to my kids was important, but this has opened my eyes to how important and how much.

I tell stories in Vietnamese and read to my children in English.  I only started reading English after receiving Better Beginnings.

One mother reads with her four year old every afternoon after school now.  She said without these books, they would not have any to read.

I think it’s been a wonderful initiative.  I feel sure it’s going to benefit both the children and parents and develop links with the library.

Better Beginnings gave me confidence. I know reading is an everyday tool and teaching my children will help them be more successful in life.
