The ability to read and write is essential for everything we do in life. Reading happens anytime, anywhere, anyhow – at home in the kitchen, keeping up with friends on Facebook, reading school newsletters, road signs, the mail, or books. We need to read all the time - for work, school and play.
Many of us take reading and writing for granted. However almost 47% Australian adults don't have the literacy skills needed to cope with the complex demands of everyday life. This lack of basic skills reduces the opportunities a person has to succeed at school, in the workplace - it may even impact their health and wellbeing.
Taking a short break to read everyday helps us become better and more confident readers. The better we get at reading the more we enjoy it. When a child is read to regularly by an adult and sees the adults around them reading they learn the starter skills of reading and the value of reading. Creating a reading culture at home and the workplace stimulates creativity and imagination and expands our potential to continue to learn for life.
