The Better Beginnings Book Cubby has had an amazing makeover thanks to staff and young writers and illustrators from Bentley Library. In late 2015 Bentley Library was the Metropolitan winner of our prize draw for those libraries who had delivered the Better Beginnings program to all of their local Kindergartens. The prize was a workshop with a local artist and their library community to decorate one of the Better Beginnings Book Cubbies. Guided by talented local artist Judith Price, a group of enthusiastic young people from Bentley schools combined their talents to come up with the amazing result below. A huge thank you to the staff at Bentley Library, particularly YPS Librarian Lilly Kensall, for embracing the project and delivering such a wonderful result. We can’t wait to send this wonderful piece of art work to libraries across the state.

As a teacher of over 30 years, I have witnessed the Better Beginnings program helping to transform children’s lives and given them greater potential to grow, learn and develop, perform well at school and succeed in later life.

I tell stories in Vietnamese and read to my children in English.  I only started reading English after receiving Better Beginnings.

One mother reads with her four year old every afternoon after school now.  She said without these books, they would not have any to read.

It’s wonderful to have support across the community emphasising the importance of reading and language development.

…I never thought of reading to my baby.  Better Beginnings has really boosted my confidence.
